ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Liz Sexe
is a dance educator, performer and choreographer/artistic director of Liz Sexe Dance Company, established in 2014.  She is described as a “clean and efficient mover,” and having “toughness under her grace.” Her choreographic work has been featured at the World Dance Alliance Festival in Honolulu, Hawaii, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Danceworks in Milwaukee, WI, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin in Spring Green, WI, and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire where she was an artist in residence. In her processes, tasks inspire poetic movement, game theory finds logical, yet often unexpected phrasing, and athletic dancing is paired with deep intentionality.  She also performs both regionally and nationally with Li Chiao-Ping Dance Company, Marlene Skog and Dancers and works with many local choreographers curating work.  She received her M.F.A. in Performance and Choreography from Mills College in Oakland, CA.  Currently, Sexe is a lecturer in UW-Madison’s Dance Department. When Sexe is not dancing, she is a Pilates instructor at Pilates Central right on the square in Madison, WI.

ABOUT THE RESIDENCY:

Folding, Unfolding, Refolding: Making Movement for Dance
For me a dance is never a “set" choreographic work because a dance piece can never be performed the same exact way due to the ephemeral (impermanence) nature of dance. This makes the process of creating dances both exciting and challenging.  Scoring, creating a list of instructions or symbols to interpret, has been used to create dances and share dances over the years.  For this residency we will be exploring how we communicate with movement and how we translate or transcribe instructions into movement.  These intentional acts become dances!

WORKSHOPS: Making Dances: Score/Improvisation/Play
We move everyday. Sitting, standing, and even breathing are all actions that can be pieced together to make dances. Starting with the most basic of movements, we will working to create thoughtful dances.  Moving towards abstracting ideas we may find new and exciting ways to move.  Play is key to this process!
This workshop is an introduction to dance improvisation! It will start with a guided warm-up and then move to individual exploration with scores.  As a group we may move into building ensembles and sharing our creations with each other.

WORKSHOPS: Paper Folding Dance: Dancing the Score for “Folding, Unfolding, Refolding”
Using all sizes of paper, including oversized pieces of paper, we will be creating worlds to explore.   Remember a time when paper and notes were how we communicated. We will ask the questions: Why do we fold paper? What can we create with paper folding? What memories exist with paper folding?
This workshop serves as sample for the community rehearsals that will take place for the performance at Hawthorne Library.
“Folding, Unfolding, Refolding” is a piece that Liz has been working on, and can be performed in various settings and with all people.
