In Libraries

There is always something new to learn at your local Madison Public Library. A hub for making & learning, the Bubbler strives to create learning opportunities for all ages. Explore below to find a new opportunity for you in one of our spaces of programs, or read about past work on the Bubbler’s impact blog.

Bubbler Room

The Bubbler Room at Madison’s Central Library (ground floor) is a free studio space to explore art and making. It hosts partner workshops, houses our current artist-in-residence, and acts as an open art studio for anyone and everyone during open library hours! We encourage learners of all ages and abilities to come and explore the free supplies, equipment and expertise we have to offer.

Check out the Bubbler Calendar or stop by the Bubbler Room for a true Madison experience if you're in the downtown area! You may run into our Artist-in-Residence or find the perfect hands-on project just waiting for you!

Bubbler Media Lab

The Media Lab at Central Madison Public Library (1st Floor / 201 W. Mifflin St.) is a free space to explore digital media production in the realms of stop motion animation, 3D world design, green screen video, audio design and graphic design. The Media Lab is for anyone and everyone! We encourage learners of all ages and abilities to come and explore the equipment and expertise we have to offer.

Cabin Fever Creative Writing

Looking to be a part of a friendly writing community? We have opportunities for you!

Free and open to adult writers of all levels, this winter the Bubbler will be hosting three consecutive all-genre workshops. These classes will be led by some of Madison’s brightest minds and will keep your creative flame alive throughout our darkest months!

Making & Learning for Kids

Are you looking for an awesome learning experience for the mini makers in your life? We’ve got you covered. Lead by our awesome in house librarians or community artists, Bubbler workshops happen at all 9 of our libraries across Madison.

To find the full list of programs, search our calendar by filtering for “bubbler” or check out MPL’s seasonal Kidspages publication and keep your eyes out for the Bubbler B to indicate making & learning events.

Summers of Making & Learning

Each summer, the Bubbler gears up to support our summer reading program. With the support of our Maker Corps interns, funded in 2017 & 2018 by the Cap Times Evjue Foundation and the Madison Public Library Foundation, the Bubbler provides pop-up maker fun, programs with community artists (like Whoopensocker!), and an annual end of summer celebration for kids and their families. In 2018, we Rocked the Library making green screen music videos to all the hit songs of the summer.

You can find a Maker Corps pop-up near you in June-August by checking out our calendar. Or read about the previous adventures in the links below.

Library Maker Kit Database

Explore our library maker kits! Designed by previous Artists in Residence, summer interns, and our fabulous in house librarians, our maker kits are used for in house library programming.

Check out our calendar for Bubbler Maker programs for kids or explore a kit yourself for project ideas you can do at home or with your group of students.

Many of the kits in the database also include facilitation guide (like this one!) to share materials and instructions, but also best practices to invite open ended learning.
