Lovey Town presents: The Glamour is Gone - Gyan Shrosbree
The Glamour is Gone is a solo exhibition by the artist Gyan Shrosbree who makes graphically abstract, mixed media paintings inspired by fashion, fiber arts, color and language.
Gyan Shrosbree is a painter whose work has been exhibited in galleries throughout the United States. She has recently been a resident at The Vermont Studio Center, The MacDowell Colony, Yaddo, and at Two Coats of Paint, Brooklyn. Shrosbree received her BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute and an MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Art in the Department of Fine Arts at Maharishi University. She lives and works in Fairfield, Iowa.
Lovey Town is a small-scale exhibition space. Exhibiting artists create works somewhere on the scale between a thimble and a postcard. Viewers participate in the exhibition in the form of paper cut-outs made from their photographs taken at the live opening event. Lovey Town primarily exists online through photographic documentation but occasionally manifests in the physical world. Additionally print catalogs are published for each exhibition. BEARINGS - ROBERT LUNDBERG
Rob makes music, takes photos, builds things, thinks about and drinks water. He has performed a wide range of music throughout the US, Canada, and Europe. His photography and academic pursuits are currently focused on the interaction of "wild" and human-built spaces—as well as the legal and societal structures informing, and our subjective reactions to, those spaces of interaction. He earned his BFA from The New School in Jazz Performance and is currently pursuing a JD and MS from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Law and Environmental Studies. Additionally, he is a graduate associate of the Center for Culture, History, and Environment.
Habitats and Inhabitants - Nate Otto
Habitats and Inhabitants is a visual exploration of cities and countrysides, abstracted, stylized, and skewed to Nate’s vision, and the people that inhabit the spaces. Rooted in abstract expressionism, outsider art, and urban contemporary, his work reflects his personal and idiosyncratic vision. Nate is honored to show in the Madison Public Library and to share his art with the people of Madison.
Although Nate has never lived in Madison, his parents met while they were both undergrads at the University of Wisconsin, and Madison has always been a familiar place that he has felt a connection to. He was born in Michigan and he has lived most of his adult life in Chicago. Nate has been making art for his entire life, but four years ago he was able to leave his social services job to become a full-time artist and illustrator. Since then Nate has had multiple solo shows in Chicago, and he has shown his work in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, and beyond. In addition to fine art, Nate has contributed illustrations and murals for Nike, Basecamp, Facebook, Chase Bank, and many others. He makes a point to make art everyday.
SHONE - Christine Olson
Shone is a Generative Art piece. There exists a point where the world of precision and logic meets unpredictability and an expressive, organic flow. This is where the audience is also creating. The work is neither static nor predictable. The artist brings to it aesthetic judgement, but the artist is only a collaborator.
Some of what the code behind this does is create different shapes that include triangles and a heptagon that slightly overlap, grow and drift apart. It controls the speed and motion path that they are on and also causes some of the shapes to react in relation to where the "mouse" is on the screen, or where you touch it. It has a mind of its own, but is also responsive. It's always different. Every time it runs, it chooses a random color that tints the shapes.
"Shone" was inspired by a poem that Olson read by Eileen Kernaghan called "Deus Ex Machina". It touches upon a final destination where all things come together, but also dissipate. It inspired her to learn how to create an interactive digital work that has a sense of something beyond the screen.
Christine Olson is a time-based artist who makes visceral, poetic, sculptural, surreal performance works. She has shown her video installations in an old winery, a vacant warehouse, a frozen lake, the woods, a chic vintage clothing shop, a room in a convent, an unused office building, and a parking space.
