Artist Statement:

Sirena Flores is 26 years-old. She identifies as Afro-Latina, she is an artist, activist, poet, healer, and entrepreneur. She recently received her bachelor's degree from UW Madison- she double majored in Sociology and Political Science, with a certificate in African studies. She received a full tuition scholarship recipient through the PEOPLE program- a pre-college program geared towards first generation, low-income, minority students. She has worked and volunteered with many youth groups. She has personally experienced homelessness, been a victim of racial profiling, and has experienced discrimination first handedly in the school system and the healthcare system. Sirena has always fought for civil rights for her community growing up. Her goals include creating positive change relating to race and education, help shape more enlightened policing policies around race biases, elevate communities of color and innovate better community interactions. Her art centers around positivity and diversity. Children of color deserve to see people who look like them in positive roles. My show is titled “Representation Matters”
