Barbara Landes
Central Library Bubbler Room
September - November 2013
Barbara Landes was the inaugural artist-in-residence with The Bubbler! Landes works primarily with handmade paper, creating sculptures made to look like textiles that twist, wrap, bind, and drape. In the context of the library’s robust collection of books, Landes’ workshops enabled the community to work with the materials integral to our acquisition of knowledge.
For the Bubbler residency, Landes engaged the public by teaching paper-making to people of all ages. Children and adults filled the newly minted Bubbler Room with a pile of pulp paintings that grew throughout the day. Landes cast the pulp paintings together and displayed them on a wall in a collaborative artwork titled “Community Shingle Wall.” Landes also created artworks that were included in the event Stacked to celebrate the re-opening of the new Central Library, exhibited alongside fellow Bubbler residents in the 2014 exhibition Bubbler Made, and showed alongside Paul Sullivan in Meaningless and Sure in 2017.
