Bird Ross
Central Library Bubbler Room
October - November 2015
Bird Ross is a Madison-based studio artist working in textiles, mixed media and mundane objects. She began as a textile artist before moving to mixed media and working with everyday objects. She received her MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and currently energizes her studio practice through collaborative work, both nationally and internationally.
Ross used her Bubbler residency as a means of opening up to the spontaneous delight that develops through collaboration, and sharing with others her knowledge of fixing. She invited others to get involved with fixing, mending, and repairing, both objects and as concepts. Bird invited numerous guests to join her in this work over the course of her residency in a series of workshops like “Sewing Sampler,” “Market Bag Workshop,” “Hootenanny Hat Making,” and “After-School Hat Making.” In addition to these workshops, Bird hosted a series of open mending hours on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays in October and November where anyone could drop by to work on mending projects.
In addition to her public workshops, Ross worked with several local organizations to share her work during this residency, including the Neighborhood Intervention Program, the Juvenile Detention Center, the Plato Group, and Porch Light.
In 2019, Ross exhibited and co-organized Women’s Work alongside Brenda Baker with the Bubbler.
