Jennifer Bastian

Central Library Bubbler Room

August - September 2017

During Jennifer Bastian’s residency, library patrons and the public were invited to experience the comfort and security of a domestic space in the library and given the opportunity to discuss problems and brainstorm solutions. Tea was available at all times of day and Bastian offered workshops on problem solving and conflict resolution. Her domestic installation wove itself throughout various areas of the library.

Jennifer Bastian received her BFA in Photography from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and her MA and MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She lives in Madison, WI and works for UW-Madison’s Digital Collections Center as a Digital Conversion Specialist. Bastian is obsessed with communal experiences, the generosity of strangers, and problem solving.

Bastian is also the Director of Communication, a sober, all-ages arts and music nonprofit that is dedicated to cultivating stronger bonds throughout the creative community in and beyond Madison. She also exhibited earlier in 2016 with the Bubbler in her solo exhibition How We Keep Our Fears and later in 2017 with Pam Phillips Olson in the show Who Matters: Intergenerational Photo & Story Project.
