Emily Balsley
Central Library Bubbler Room
September - October 2019
The title of this residency, Joy in All the Things, describes Emily Balsley's state of euphoria while she explores a wide variety of projects, ideas, materials, and creative endeavors. In her own world of making, no project or idea is beyond the scope of possibility if it inspires happiness. From the simplicity of making pompoms, to the hectic world of public art and murals, to the refined skills of hand-lettering, to the whimsy of anthropomorphic illustrations, Joy in All the Things aspired to fill the Bubbler with joy in all pursuits!
Balsley is an illustrator and maker with a passion to create all of the things. She spends her days and nights hustling from project to project in her colorful studio in Madison, Wisconsin, focusing on painting murals and creating illustrations. Her freelance clients include American Girl, Mudpuppy, Highlights Magazine, Storey Publishing, the UW Memorial Union, Food Fight Restaurants, and Madison Magazine.
Balsley exhibited with the Bubbler after her residency with the project titled 100 Days of Homes in early 2020.
