Anwar Floyd-Pruitt
Bubbler Artist Cohort
July - December 2021
A 2020 UW-Madison MFA graduate, Anwar Floyd-Pruitt was a part of the 2021 Bubbler Artist Cohort. His recent work explores ideas of time travel, parallel universes, and imagined spaces. Anwar also writes and performs a family-friendly singalong called Hip Hop Puppet Party.
Born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Floyd-Pruitt’s entrance to his art-making practice is unconventional. After graduating from Harvard, Floyd-Pruitt’s career started in advertising in New York City. However, Floyd-Pruitt knew that he wanted to do something creative. He moved back home and enrolled in UW-Milwaukee, earning his BFA in Studio Art. In 2017, he enrolled in UW-Madison’s MFA Program.
Integral to Floyd-Pruitt’s Bubbler work is puppet making, collage and self-portraiture. As a MFA UW student, Floyd-Pruitt won the graduate Chazen Exhibition, which displayed his show SUPERNOVA: Charlotte and Gene’s Radical Imagination Station. In this 2020 show, Floyd-Pruitt explored his family through photography, self-portraiture and bright, bold colors. The inclusion of mirrors enabled viewers to insert themselves into his family’s history and simultaneously reflect on their history.
As a member of the Bubbler cohort, Floyd-Pruitt’s community art-making practice aims to make self-portraiture accessible. A December 2021 community project taught children the importance of mixed-media portraiture and self-expression.
