Teena Wilder
Bubbler Artist Cohort
July - December 2021
Teena Wilder is a multidisciplinary artist and writer based in Madison, Wisconsin. Teena was raised in rural Summerton, South Carolina, and received her BFA from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design in New Studio Practice with minors in both Humanities and Art History. She is a multidisciplinary artist who through an investigative practice utilizes video, sculpture, performance, and design; seeking to archive Blackness and celebrate Blackhood, submerging individual narrative into spaces of collectivism.
Raised primarily in South Carolina, Wilder moved to Wisconsin to attend the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design where Wilder found performance art an engaging and affordable medium. As an undergrad, the artist would create family portraits through taping their body to a wall, exploring gender and queerness through evocative and subtle video work.
Wilder graduated college in the midst of the pandemic and moved to Madison for their partner’s job. Wilder worked at Freedom, Inc., primarily assisting sexual assault survivors. During the Bubble residency, Wilder worked with young children in en effort to understand self-determination and consent through theater.
Wilder was also a part of the 2022 Bubbler exhibition Time(is) that explored Black art in Madison. As of late 2022, the artist is a fellow at the Portland Museum of Art.
