Library as Retreat Space

Library as Retreat Space took place May 1 to 7, 2017 at Madison Central Library. The project was initiated by Julka Älmquist (anthropologist), Jeppe Knudsen (anthropologist), Trent Miller (visual artist and library transformer at Madison Public Library), Sara Bindeballe (music staff at Dokk1), and Marianne Krogbæk (designer at ITK/Dokk1). The results of this weeklong project at Madison Public Library (Madison, WI), along with a similar project at Dokk1 (Aarhus, Denmark) were then shared at the NEXTLibrary Conference in Aarhus.

Day 1: Sara Fox presented a talk and demonstration of Massage Therapy and Devin Coogan presented a workshop titled Embodied Drawing

Day 2: Huma Siddiqui presented “The Spice Box,” part of a series funded in part by a gift from Marvin J. Levy

Day 3: Clare Norelle presented “Body Awareness and Creativity”

Day 4: Jennifer Bastian facilitated tea and conversation

Day 5: Bubbler’s Night Light coincided with Madison’s Gallery Night with “Listening in the Dark” with CHANTS and friends

Day 6: Adam Geremia and Meredith Adams Smart presented “Circulation and Renewal”

In addition to scheduled classes, The Bubbler Room was open during library hours for other art experiences, meditative happenings, and projects by local artists and Team Bubbler. Daily included Morning Meditation with Haley Schreier.

Library as Retreat Space events were presented in partnership with the Bubbler, and funded through a mini-grant provided by The Madison Public Library Foundation. The Bubbler is funded by a grant from the Institute for Museum and Library Services.
