Amy Mietzel + Marcia Yapp

Central Library Bubbler Room

November - December 2016

How do community and chess relate? For some, chess is an integral part of childhood, each move indicative of one coming into their existence and learning the importance of strategy and tactics in life. Madison artists Amy Mietzel and Marcia Yapp drew on the imagery of chess from Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking Glass.

For 20 years, Yapp worked as an arts teacher. Mietzel is a mosaic artist. Through this residency, Madisonians are treated to the fusion of their backgrounds and how they connect to chess. Community members of all ages had the opportunity to create unique mosaic chess boards, up-cycled chess pieces, and learn how to play the game of chess.

Cognizant of chess culture in Madison, including clubs at libraries, Mietzel and Yapp thought that this residency would be the perfect time to explore how the game and the library intersect.

Yapp founded an independent art center for children called Bare Knuckle Arts after 20 years of being an arts educator. Mietzel continues to make mosaics in Madison.
