Memory Cloth Circle

Central Library Bubbler Room

July 2017

The Memory Cloths Circle evolved from the 2013 MMOCA Triennial as a Relational Art project at Lakeside Coffee House. People were invited to tell stories and embroider their memories. It was fun and meaningful, so the group has continued ever since. At various exhibits they provide materials and invite people to join in the process.

A group named Amazwi Abesifazane (meaning Voices of Women) started making Memory Cloths in South Africa to give voice to their experiences of Apartheid. After hearing about the group here in Madison they were asked to share the process in the U.S.

Memory Cloths Circle members led workshops in the Bubbler Room throughout the month to explore visitors’ own experiences and memories through creating their own memory cloth.
