Community Art Utility Box Project
The Utility Box Art Program gave Madison artists the opportunity to transform ordinary objects of urban infrastructure into something fun and unique, enhancing our public spaces. Launched in 2017, the Madison Arts Commission championed the project with the intention to highlight, encourage, and promote local artists in the public realm.
In partnership with Madison Public Library’s Bubbler program, the Community Art Utility Box Project highlighted a number of boxes in locations near libraries and other community centers, showcasing the work of community artists, students, or community groups. Below are a few featured boxes and partnerships. Bubbler artist-in-residence Kim Charles Kay also led workshops and brainstorming sessions with groups at community centers and libraries. Following those sessions she ‘utilized’ those designs and digitally collaged the drawings together for each box. All photos by Jessica Mardi Photography.
